To the Moon and Back: Tesla Car Batteries

If we stacked all the little Tesla car batteries end to end, they would reach all the way to the moon and back.

InsideEVs.com says Tesla has sold 2 million cars, the first automaker to reach such a milestone.

ElectricCarPledge.com tells us “a normal 60 kWh (Tesla) battery runs on 6,216 tiny cells”.

Ultrafire.com provides dimensions of the Model 18650 battery cell used by Tesla: 66.8mm tall or 2.6 inches tall.

2,000,000 Tesla cars x 6,216 battery cells per pack = 12,432,000,000 battery cells

12,432,000,000 battery cells x 2.6 inches length = 32,323,200,000 inches

There’s 63,360 inches in a mile.

32,323,200,000 inches / 63,360 inches in a mile = 510,151 miles

NASA says the moon is around 250,000 miles away.

Tesla has made so many of these tiny little batteries that if we stacked them all together end to end, they would reach all the way to the moon and back — literally.
